(KANGLEY NOT STAMFORD!)
There has been a Catholic church-related youth football group running in Sydenham since about 1999. Various church members from the Church of the Resurrection and Our Lady and St Phillip Neri have run the group. Eamon O`Connor, Rafael Jimenez, and Alain Speed started the proceedings, followed by Harris John-Baptiste and Gerry Gross. Currently John Perry and Steve Dawkins supervise the two hour session between 14.00 and 16.00 on Saturday afternoons in term time from September to July.
The age range is generally between five and thirteen. There is a mixture of boys and girls from local schools: St Philip Neri, St Bartholomew’s, St Joseph’s, Forest Hill Boys, Coloma, St Olaves, Bonus Pastor and John Fisher. Whilst emphasis is put on enjoying football, the supervision is strict and players are encouraged to play fairly and in the right sporting spirit. John and Steve are both CRB checked (thanks to the Church of the Resurrection!) and new players are always welcome ! Please bring a drink, suitable clothing and wear shin pads.
The cost is £3.00 per session which helps pay for footballs, hire of pitch, bibs, chocolates for end of term, and most importantly and end of season party for the children at the Catholic Club in Watlington Grove, Sydenham where medals are presented to all attendees.
An adult session for parents takes place on Monday evenings between 8.00 and 9.00 at Kangley Bridge Road AstroTurf Leisure Centre. It started this season and has proved very popular, with rehydration, and debriefing on what went wrong or right, in the Golden Lion afterwards! Whilst most people are from the Church of the Resurrection or St Philip Neri, all are most welcome to join in.
